Melatonin is a hormone released from the pineal gland in the back of the brain. As children and infants our pineal glands were very active and produced an abundance of melatonin to enable us to sleep. Sleep has an important function in allowing us to release other hormones important for growth repair and maintenance of tissues.

In old age it is not uncommon to see the Pineal gland shrivelled up on x-rays suggesting that it produces very little or no melatonin. It is not uncommon to see that the quality and quantity of sleep of most adults diminishes as we get older in parallel to the reduction of melatonin levels.
